about

This industry of music and its social network of consumer music listening has evolved dramatically since the time I began playing a musical instrument. So much so, that now more than ever, I confine myself to a singular task-though a pleasurable one- that of writing and producing the music I love.
My friend and former college professor Dr. Bill Hinkle remarked the other day in conversation that he and I are in the 4th Quarter.
Now I'm not much of a football fan, but I certainly get it, and his implication of urgency in completing one's life assignments did in fact, get me thinking about legacies. I'm at a point in my life where there is really only so much time left and one seeks simpler processes, such as carrying out that which brings if but a moment of happiness (for no one in particular) and letting go that which leads away from it.
My father, who had plenty of platitudes for everything, once laid this gem on me, "Son, everyone loves Come To Jesus i(n whole notes) but when someone's paying you, you gotta play Turkey In The Straw", as if part of some unspoken agreement, that walking the path to artistry doesn't necessarily put you on the path to fortune, (or vice versa) one that also admonishes not going batshit on your audience, even for purposes of artistic expression.
Duly noted, Dad.
Throughout my jobbing tenure, I carried a burgeoning backlog of compositions that had not seen the light of day sadly until now. [In the 4th Quarter] and Alas! No Turkey In The Straw for me.
I submit to you dear reader, that herein lies the conflict, Artistry vs Commerce. Is it all about the money? or about having climbed the mountain because it was there? My favorite composers' works are such, usually from a visceral quality present and the impassioned delivery from its performers, not necessarily from slick packaging, flashy production, or over the top technique.
When I listen to 'Trane's "Love Supreme" Stravinsky's "Firebird Suite" Mahler's symphonies, or songwriters from earlier pop cultures, Bob Dylan, Marvin Gaye, Joni Mitchell, etc I feel a certain genuineness that has been supplanted in today's offerings (even jazz) by an emotional black hole- which, if I may make a comparison without going full blown fuddy duddy- falls short of any standards that have long been etched into the theory of exemplary composition and performance.
Perhaps because of this, the rule nowadays dictates music serving a lesser role in the overall scheme, therefore I speak for the exceptions (of which there are a few) to that rule, the few who believe the music matters and dedicate their lives staying true to that belief, for they are the Underground, the unafraid societal misfits who remind us all of how fulfilling music listening can be.
All that said, I am proud to present my latest collection of works that I hope will please the real listener in each of you. Let each track take you on a journey of your own aesthetic, and may you find yourself resetting the needle back to the beginning after your first trip through this musical sojourn.
LARRY WILLIAMS

Larry, what you have made here is almost too beautiful to describe. It is stunning work of the highest order, both creatively and technically. I am so moved after listening that I find myself at a loss to describe how beautiful this work truly is, the harmony, arranging, time, virtuosic at every level. And your tone...so warm and articulate....Thanks so much for sharing this with me.
I may rejoin NARAS just so I can vote for you!
